An Allotment is a small area of land (approximately 250 sq metres) that an individual can rent on which to grow fruit flowers and vegetables. There are 48 sites across the city with arouynd 2000 individual allotments. Because they are very popular you will typically have to wait 10 years to be allocated one of them. Annual rent in 2026 is £170 for a full plot.
A community garden is an area of green space where local residents grow food, improve biodiversity, and foster community connections, often on previously derelict land. There are many of them across the city – in housing estates, hospital grounds, the Royal Botanical Gardens, church grounds and otherwise unused farmland.
