New Town

Edionburgh’s New Town was designed in the 18th Century. Grand Georgian terraces sit in wide streets. Narrow lanes run behind: originally mews cottages and stables – now sought after city centre houses. Many of the terraces have basements with flourishing gardens. The New Town lies to the north side of the city centre. (The Old Town which largely dates from 14th and 15th century lies on the south side of the centre). Original New Town houses are subject to strict planning regulations to keep the uniform character of the area, although there are also some iconic unique buildings such as the Portrait Gallery
