Julie and Billy from South Queensferry Coastguards were at the Port of Leith Open Day. They gave fascinating descriptions of how they work with Lifeboats, Police, Fire and Rescue and Ambulance to rescue people in danger on or near the water. We heard about the wide range of skills they need and how they are trained – for example by volunteering to go up to their thighs in mud and then being rescued by their colleagues.
To make it real – we were given the chance to ‘rescue’ a plastic duck by throwing a life belt into a paddling pool. Much fun was had by all!

Beside the Coastgaurds I spotted a tractor that works in the docks. Twice as big and ten times more comfortable than the tractors in grew up with in the 1960s!
